At college this year we were learning body painting, this was a completely new thing for me and i was really worried at the start because i didn't have a steady hand but as we worked through all the lessons i became more and more confident in doing my painting. at the end of all our lessons we were given a brief for the body painting competition , we had to design a body painting total look incorporating hair , make-up and props. the brief said we could choose form the headings,
- Horoscopes
- Nature
- Movie characters
I was really worried about it and thought i wasn't going to be able to pull something together. but after doing some research and talking to my lecturers i felt alot better and decided to do the queen of hearts from Tim Burton's Alice in wonderland. we spent a couple of weeks practicing our looks in class and i found a model from one of the hair dressing classes to model for me :) i was getting really excited the date for the competition was the 14th of November.
Preparation
to prepare for the competition i went and bought my own body paints in red and black ( the only colours i was really using ) , i bought new body painting brushed and stocked up on glitter and black and silver gems and sequins. I bought a bra and thong in red to make things easier for painting :) I did loads of research and put together a mood board of my inspirations. I also made a kind of half skirt out of black net and stappled playing cards onto to it and made a headdress of playing cards :) x
The day of the competition
On the day of the competition i arrived at college at half 8 to set up i was really nervous about everything but tried to stay calm and set up and waited for my model to arrive the competition started at 9 so by quarter to 9 i was completely ready and still waiting for my model... buy half 9 i was in total panic my model hadn't turned up i was a state i didn't know what to do, luckily I managed to find a girl from beauty who was willing to do it for me i was so relived but i was already half an hour behind everyone else. I got started as soon as i had got my model ready and i powered through all the block colourings on the body , i then concentrated on the detail and i managed to make really good process however time was running out so i couldn't have done as much of the make-up and hair as i would have liked, i managed to do a little bit and managed to pull a total look out the bag in time. when we had finished we positioned our models and waited for judging i was so nervous about everything because i had not had enough time and it wasn't the model i had in mind. After judging we got the results i didn't place but the lectures seemed happy with my work and that was a massive relief, i felt proud of myself i don't think i enjoyed the body painting as much as i could have done if everything had gone to plan.
hopefully the next competion i do will be better :D

The Drama students at James watt college were doing a production of Aladdin for the Christmas pantomime and we were asked to do the make-up. I was doing one of the genie characters the more serious of the two with Lucy. we had fun trying to design the plans and decided to do a simple base make-up and using aqua colour thicken up his eyebrows and add a comical beard and moustache, we also decided to thicken up his side burn using black mascara. when we met our model he was so funny and we discussed with him what kind of thing he was thinking and we got him to tell us about his costume and his character, we then explained our plans thoroughly so we all knew we were on the same page. when doing our practice with him we had a complete laugh and had fun trying to get the beard and moustache right, he found it tickle when we were doing the sideburns and wouldn't keep still !!! . once we had finished he loved it so we were very happy and excited for the day of the panto. on the actual day of the panto our model came up he was a little nervous so he wasn't as funny when he first arrived but soon after he was talking a joking away with us again. we spent about 20 min getting all the make-up perfect and fixing his sideburns he had a orange turban to fix so we made sure it looked good with the thick sideburns. we were overall really happy with the way things turned out and so were our lectures the fact our model was so nice and funny made it a relaxed environment to work in and we managed to have fun while working which i really enjoyed. even though on the panto day we were busy and rushing about we were still relaxed about it and i feel that that really helped us power on with our work. I loved working on the panto It was a great way to have an insight into what industry will be like, it was a great experience and it was really nice to work with other departments in the college. it was fun to help out the drama students and was really amazing to know that our make-up would be seen by all college students and citizens around greenock , i felt really proud of my work. :) I hope i get a chance to work with the drama students again x
